Birdie (Matthew Modine) is a boy who grew up living in a fantasy world. He has always longed for the lives of birds, envied them for their wings, and was so excited to make his own that he fantasized about flying in the sky someday. The outbreak of the Vietnam War interrupts the boy's dream. The brutal scenes on the battlefield stimulated the fragile Birdy so much that he finally lost his mind, became a “mental patient” in the real sense, and was sent to the hospital. In the hospital, he never spoke, squatted in the posture of a bird, ate in the manner of a bird, and looked at a small blue sky in a cage, yearning to fly. In order to treat Burdie, the hospital brings in his childhood friend Al (Nicolas Cage) in the hope that he can guide Burdie to communicate with people again.
