The film centers on Bill (Damon), an American oil rig worker from Oklahoma. He has to travel to Marseilles to visit his long-lost daughter (Breslin), who is in prison and insists she did not commit the murder. Faced with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complex legal system, Bill is determined to make a desperate attempt to save his daughter. Along the way, he struck up a friendship with a local woman and her young daughter, embarked on a personal journey of discovery, and gained a greater sense of belonging.
