In 1963, at the age of 21, two important events happened in Hawking's life, one sad and one happy. That year he was diagnosed with AMyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that would gradually paralyse his body, leaving only his heart, lungs and brain to function, and eventually his heart and lungs to function. Doctors predicted he would live only two years. The fatal blow almost caused Hawking to abandon his studies, but the appearance of a girl at the party magically changed everything: Jane, Hawking's first wife.
