Jay's father, also a surfer, took Jay down with him to surf when he was 9 years old. Jay soon mastered the skills of surfing and has since fallen in love with surfing luck. When Jay (Jonny Weston) was 15 years old, he discovered the legendary Mavericks, one of the world's largest waves, off the coast of Half Moon Bay. in order to conquer the Mavericks, a huge wave, Jay implored surfing instructor Frosty Hazen (Gerard Butler) to guide his skills. In their quest to learn instruction, the two gradually developed a kinship that was both teacher and friend, which also influenced their respective attitudes towards life. At the age of 16, Jay successfully conquered the Mavericks waves and his spectacular performance was captured by photographers, making him a rising star in the surfing world and a beloved icon for surfers around the world.
