Alan Golden (Renée Zellweger) is a Harvard graduate working for a New York magazine on the upswing when his mother, Kate (Meryl Streep), is stricken with cancer and has to leave her job to return to the small town of Longhorn, Pennsylvania, to take care of her family. Alan has always admired his scholarly father George (William Hurt), who teaches American literature, but doesn't think much of his mother, who is a housewife. In the course of caring for his mother, Alan discovers how difficult her life has been, as well as many of his father's dark secrets. It is in the rocky tremors of family relationships that Alan finally gets to know his parents for the first time, and finally finds the truest touch in his life.
