Paul (Paul Giamatti), a teacher at the prep school Barton College, is not very popular with either the students, the teachers or the principal, who find him pompous and rigid. During the 1970 Christmas vacation, Paul stays at the school to supervise the students who can't go home. After a few days, only one student stayed - a 15-year-old troublemaker named Angus, a good student marred by bad behavior and always on the verge of trying to get expelled. Joining Paul and Angus in staying is Mary, the school's head cook, an African-American woman who caters to the sons of the privileged and whose own son has recently disappeared in Vietnam. These three very different lost souls form a strange Christmas family, sharing misadventures and realizing that none of them are thankful for their pasts during two snowy weeks in New England.
