Ike (Richard Gere) is a columnist whose wife is the top dog. However, this doesn't bring him much good luck; on the contrary, after divorcing his wife because of their bad personality, Ike is even more depressed because of this relationship. By chance, Ike hears a story in a bar about a Maryland woman, Maggie (Julia Roberts), who ran away from the red carpet three times. He becomes deeply interested in the story and writes a column about it.When Ike went out into the field to interview the locals, he didn't realize that people were generally outraged by what he was doing. The main character of the event, Maggie, who is about to walk down the aisle for the fourth time, is so embarrassed by reading Ike's column that she escapes for the fourth time. Maggie believes that Ike has victimized her and decides to return the favor.
