Based on the novel of the same name by Scottish author Alasdair Gray, the film combines elements of realism, fantasy, and science fiction to reimagine the story of Frankenstein. Set in the late Victorian era, a woman who escaped her abusive husband's death is tragically killed by Bella (Emma Stone), who is resurrected by scientists, but her mind is stuck in a child's stage, but she is also full of longing for the unknown; she elopes with her slutty attorney and embarks on an adventure to dig out her own self in an attempt to get rid of the era's prejudice against women, and to pursue equality and sexual liberation.
