Eight years following the dinosaur escape to Sonar Island, Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) is reluctant to return to that hellhole, no matter what. Despite making a vow, the status quo has forced him to retract it. One of his prehistoric animal studies is in financial straits. Then Alan is approached by wealthy businessman Paul Kirby (William H. Macy) and his wife, Amanda (Téa Leoni), who ask him to be their guide on a plane trip to Isla Sorna. With a good paycheck and the knowledge that they won't have to land on the island, Alan accepts the offer.However, things go in the opposite direction and their plane ends up landing on the island. Only then does he learn that Mr. and Mrs. Kirby came here to look for their missing son.
