Centuries ago, Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) was a highly respected monk who told timeless stories in the isolated wilderness. One day, Nick the Devil (Tom Waits) arrives uninvited. Seduced by him, Parnassus makes a wager with the devil and ends up getting eternal life as he wishes.Time has come and gone, and the Doctor travels around the world with a circus of fantasy consisting of his daughter Valentina (Lily Cole), young Anton (Andrew Garfield), and midget Percy (Verne Troyer). Just as his daughter is about to turn 16, Nick reappears. It turns out that the Doctor had fallen in love with a woman (Lily Cole), but eternal life does not have eternal youth. In order to stay with his lover, he makes another foolish bet with the devil, and the price for his restored youth is to sacrifice his first child to him. As the day of fulfillment draws nearer, the troubled Doctor makes another bet with the Devil that he can keep his daughter if he is the first to collect five souls. At this point, the downtrodden Tony (Heath Ledger) shows up just in time...
