Chili (John Travolta) is an experienced debt collector, and this time, he is ordered by his boss Ray (Dennis Farina) to travel to Hollywood to find a filmmaker named Harry (Gene Hackman). Unexpectedly, Chili is a huge movie fan, and after meeting Harry, Chili decides, on a whim, to team up with Harry for a movie called Mr. Ralph Joy.Karen (Rene Russo) and Martin (Danny DeVito) join Chili's project, and even Harry's debtor, Carteret (Delroy Lindo), becomes interested in the movie. However, Carteret has his own agenda, and he decides to get Harry and Chili to help him retrieve a large amount of stolen money that was left at the airport. Chili's uncontrollable behavior angers his boss, Ray, and he arrives in Hollywood, where a war is about to break out.
