Best-selling horror author Sutter Kane (Jürgen Prochnow) has gone missing. A portion of the novel's manuscript, written by him and about to be published in print, also mysteriously disappears. Kane's immersive descriptions and bold, forward-thinking predictions made the book a hit even before it was published. Many fans became so enthralled with his work that they committed irrational acts of violence.In order not to delay the publication, the publisher enlists private investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) to track down Kane along with female editor Linda Styles (Julie Carmen). John doesn't believe in the magic of the book at first, however when he and Linda arrive in the town Kane wrote about, both are shocked. The town is truly as Kane depicts it, and the horrific and bizarre events of the novel take place immediately.
