In 1975, Northern Ireland was suffering and traumatized by the violent riots of the Northern Ireland Volunteer Army against Roman Catholic civilians. Young Alistair (Liam Neeson), then 17 years old, can't help but join the Northern Ireland Volunteer Army as well, infected by the atmosphere of violence, and brutally kills young Joe Griffin (James Nesbitt James Nesbitt) brutally kills Joe's older brother in front of him. As the riots subside, Alistair is sentenced to twelve years in prison, while Joe, who witnessed his brother's murder, lives with his mother's blame and guilt. More than thirty years later, a television station invites both Alistair and Joe to appear on a program in an attempt to not only uncover the truth of the incident, but also to reconcile the two men through an interview.
