Troy Gable (Colin Hanks), who dropped out of law school to become a writer without his father's knowledge (Tom Hanks), sees an ad for a personal assistant in the newspaper and discovers that his prospective boss is the once-fashionable “The Great Buck Howard”. Buck (John Malkovich) is a spiritual firstist who can hypnotize, see through and find objects through his mind. His magical performances have led to 61 guest appearances on NBC's Talk Show Tonight, hosted by Johnny Carson. But as time passed, Buck's one-size-fits-all routine lost its charm, and he now earns his living only by touring. As Buck's travel manager and personal assistant, Troy travels with him to small towns in rural states across the U.S. Everywhere Buck opens with the words “I love this town,” and no matter how big or small the audience, he prepares to give it his all. With the help of press agent Valerie (Emily Blunt), Buck is suddenly back in the public eye by mistake and invited to perform in Las Vegas for an extended period of time. But just as Buck's fortunes turn around, another incredibly strange thing happens ......
