The story takes place in contemporary Hamburg, Germany. A mysterious man comes to the local Muslim community seeking help. The man is half Chechen and half Russian, and is badly wounded. His purpose in coming here is to recover his father's large ill-gotten gains. Everyone around him is skeptical about his identity. Was he a victim or a thief, or worse, a man of extreme terror? Also involved are an English banker and a young female lawyer. Meanwhile, a sophisticated German spy is watching them, trying to unravel the mystery man's agenda.
