Thomas (John Bell) has lost his parents since childhood and grew up in an orphanage. Because of his stutter, Thomas has been a boy who is not confident and introverted since childhood and is often bullied in the orphanage. One day, Thomas was invited into the director's office because of trouble, where he met a woman named Mary (Connie Nielsen), and thus, Mary became Thomas's new mother.Mary's husband Eric (Aidan Quinn) doesn't like Thomas, he wants a more confident and sunny child, so he is very cold to Thomas. The good thing is that Thomas still soon makes a lot of new friends, and under their leadership, Thomas's character gradually cheers up. In a mysterious cave, Thomas meets a seal, which he names Smudge, and a deep friendship is formed between one person and one animal.
