A plane crashes into an isolated, snow-covered forest with a dead body and $4.5 million in cash on board. Hank (Bill Paxton), his brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton) and their friend Lou are all in thrall to the money, as they all need it. Hank has a small reputation in the village and a wife about to give birth; Jacob is less successful and always dreaming of buying back his father's farm; and Lou, unemployed and a good cup of tea, wants the money as bad as he can get it. Standing in the snow, faced with a fortune they have never seen in their lives, the three men make a secret deal, but betrayal, suspicion and mistrust are born. Their relationship will be put to the test as Hank's love for his wife Shara (Brigitte Fonda), his friendship with Lou, and his brotherly love for Jacques are all put to the test!
