In the 4th century A.D., with the Roman Empire in decline, in the port of Alexandria, the polytheistic wise woman Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) teaches her disciples. Orisitis (Oscar Isaac) makes frequent advances toward her, even confessing his love in the theater; the slave Daeus (Max Minghella) is also attracted to her, but is unable to say anything due to his humble status.
