Grace Marks was a poor, young Irish immigrant working as a housemaid in Upper Canada when, in 1843, she and James McDermott, a stable hand, were charged with the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and their housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. James was sentenced to hang, while Grace was sentenced to life imprisonment. Grace's role in this sensationalized double murder case made her one of the most baffling and infamous women in Canada in the 1840s, and she served 30 years in prison before finally being acquitted. Her conviction has been the subject of much controversy.Controversy abounds, with heated debates over whether Grace was a participant in the murders or whether she was unaware of them.
