Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant), a rich, idle man, meets Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) on a cruise ship. The two get to know each other well, and Nickie takes Terry to visit his grandmother in a rural town while the ship is temporarily docked, where Terry discovers Nickie's talent for oil painting. Terry discovers Nickie's talent for oil painting, and a secret love affair develops between the two. When the ship reaches its final destination in New York, the two are separated and agree to reunite at the top of the Empire State Building in New York six months later. Six months later, Nickie waited alone at the Empire State Building from daytime to darkness, but no sign of Terry, and left in disappointment. On the other hand, Terry was in a car accident on his way here and couldn't make it. Terry, unable to walk, is reluctant to look for Nickie again, but by chance he meets Nickie again at a dance six months later, when Nickie is already a famous painter, and Nickie finally finds Terry's house and prepares to pursue Terry's heart again. What will be the outcome of this tumultuous love affair?
