On July 20, 1969, American Neil Armstrong aboard Apollo 11 successfully landed on the moon, taking a major step of significance for mankind. Meanwhile, veteran astronaut Jim Lowell (Tom Hanks) and his family and friends closely follow this historic moment on television. Jim has flown to the vicinity of the moon on Apollo 8, and he shares the dream of landing on the moon in his lifetime. The moment soon arrives, just three months later, when Jim is named commander of Apollo 13, and he, along with his partners Fury DeHaans (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), will once again lift off to the moon. They are full of hope, but they don't realize the endless trials and tribulations that await them ahead...
