In 1987, Doris Duke (Susan Sarandon), who has inherited the entire estate and is said to be the richest woman in the world, hires Bernard Lafferty (Ralph Fiennes) to be the housekeeper. The homosexual Bernard had spent six months in a sober living home for his drinking problem, but Doris was unconcerned about Bernard's personal problems. Bernard improves the management of Doris's house little by little, and Doris acquiesces to, and even encourages, Bernard's unusual sexuality, resulting in an extraordinary friendship between the two men. In Doris's later years, Bernard's overprotectiveness causes Doris's lawyer and economic advisor, Waldo Taft (James Rebhorn), to seriously question his motives ......
