Edith (Mia Wasikowska), an amateur horror writer, meets Thomas (Tom Hiddleston), a handsome British inventor, whose polite and gentle demeanor soon attracts Edith's attention and the two develop rapidly. However, Edith's father, Carter (Jim Beaver), is hostile to Thomas and is adamantly opposed to his daughter's relationship with him.When Carter dies in an accident, Edith decides to leave her hometown and follow Thomas to the frozen county of Cumbria, where a luxurious but desolate cottage known as Scarlet Cottage stands. Edith and Thomas are greeted by Thomas's sister, Lucille (Jessica Chastain), whose strange and abrasive manner makes Edith uncomfortable. Soon, Edith discovers that in the villa, which seems to be alive, there are strands of wandering souls floating around and countless secrets buried.
