Sister Helen (Susan Sarandon) is asked by death row inmate Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn) to visit him in prison. Matthew denies being sentenced to death for the brutal murder of a young couple and appeals. Helen travels all the way to the village to investigate the truth. As the innocent couple is tortured to death on the one hand, and the soon-to-be-executed criminal's spirit on the other, Helen tries her best to help Matthew, but when she is confronted with the victim's parents' complaints and the public's anger, Helen's heart is also caught up in a tangled moral judgment. Helen ultimately sensitizes Matthew. Before the execution, Matthew admits his crime and prays for forgiveness from the victim's family, and walks the last 168 hours of his life with peace and dignity.
