William Blake (Johnny Depp), a young American from Cleveland, heads west to make a living, and he's ready to apply for a job as an accountant at a local factory. Unsurprisingly, he misses his application and is thrown out. He is also abused by the owner of the local Dickinson Metal Works and even has a gun pointed at his head.When he arrives at the local tavern in frustration, a one-night stand takes place. Unexpectedly, the boyfriend of the woman he had a one-night stand with bursts in, and a bullet is embedded through the woman's chest and into William's chest, who instinctively kills the woman's boyfriend and seizes his horse and makes a hasty escape.
