Vera, an elderly woman in a nursing home, rolls down a flight of stairs with her wheelchair, killing her instantly. Dorothy (Kathy Bates), the nanny who cared for her, stands by holding the murder weapon. Dorothy is the only suspect. As it turns out, Dorothy was a maid employed by Vera for 40 years, and since she suffered from her master's scolding and perverted demands, the case could easily have been steered towards a murder with a grudge and an opportunity for revenge. The police have been trying to convict her and sentence her to 20 years in prison. The case alarms Dorothy's daughter Selena (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who works as a journalist in New York City from afar. She becomes personally involved in the case and is once again reunited with her long-separated mother for a few days. This causes her to look back at her dark past, and Dorothy always has dawning memories of her daughter as a child. At the same time, a demonic figure awakens to the memory. It was her husband, who was often violent towards her. At the end of her patience, she made a final counterattack ......
