The series describes how a dysfunctional family tries to ensure its stability. The characters of the Flower family are all eccentric, which makes it difficult for them to unite. They live in a crowded, dirty, messy, dilapidated, and creaky old house. Maurice (Julian Barratt) is a children's book writer, and his wife Deborah (Olivia Colman) is a music teacher. They have twin children, Amy (Sophia Di Martino) and Donald (Daniel Rigby), but they fall in love with the same girl, Abigail (Georgina Campbell), and are jealous of each other every day. Maurice's mother Heidi (Leila Hoffman) also lives in their home. Deborah and Maurice's marriage broke down a long time ago, but they are still together. Maurice is deeply tortured by inner demons and secrets, and Deborah suspects that her husband is having a gay relationship with Shun (Will Sharpe), a Japanese illustrator for his children's books.
