Thirteen-year-old Amy (Anna Paquin) loses her mother in a traffic accident and has to be sent to her father (Jeff Daniels), who has been divorced from her for years. The father runs a farm and spends his days working on all sorts of weird and wonderful inventions. One day she finds a nest of abandoned goose eggs in a bush. She carefully brings them home and successfully hatches a nest of baby geese, but due to the government's rule that wild geese cannot be kept at home, Amy must release these baby geese into nature. Her father comes up with a wonderful idea to help Amy. He makes a glider for her to learn to fly with the geese, and then escorts Amy, the "mother goose", to fly the geese to Lake Ontario during the migration season.
