In 2008, Republican candidate John McCain (Ed Harris) is running against Democratic candidate Barack Obama for the 44th President of the United States. McCain, the underdog in the race, follows the advice of his senior campaign staff (Woody Harrelson) and other staffers and decides to increase his competitiveness by choosing a woman as his vice-presidential candidate. After some screening, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (Julianne Moore) is selected. However, Palin's demeanor and knowledge of the state frequently throws the campaign team for a loop.
