Prince Hamlet of Denmark (Kenneth Branagh) is summoned home for his father's funeral and the wedding of his own mother to his uncle Claudius. The sudden death of his father, coupled with his mother's remarriage, leaves Hamlet depressed. Once Hamlet arrives on the high platform of the castle in the middle of the night, he meets with his father's ghost and learns that his father was poisoned by his uncle Claudius. The ghost asks Hamlet to take revenge on the murderer who usurped the throne and took the princess. Hamlet, burdened with the task of revenge, decides to cover himself by pretending to be mad in order to spy on Claudius' every move. He then arranges a court scene in which a scene of the king's murder is dramatized. While his uncle watches the original scene, Hamlet accidentally kills his lover's (Kate Winslet) father, causing the lover to go mad and die. Hamlet's mother then dies from drinking poisoned wine, and Hamlet eventually kills his uncle in a fit of rage.
