The film is based on real events. Hank Delfield (Tommy Lee Jones), father of Iraqi infantryman Mike Delfield (Jonathan Tucker), receives news that his son is missing after returning home. Veteran Hank drives to the barracks to investigate for himself, picking up a glimpse of the trauma Mike experienced in Iraq from his son's cell phone. Soon after, police found Mike dead, dismembered and burned. Hank's wife, Joan (Susan Sarandon), is so devastated that she can't help herself. Hank meets local detective Emily (Charlize Theron) in the process of investigating the case, the two establish a special friendship, and step by step closer to the truth of the event.
