Charlie (Nicolas Cage) is a kind, gentle, child-loving good cop with a vain and selfish wife; they bicker like all mismatched couples, but Charlie always puts up with it. One day Charlie's wife says she dreamed about her father and decides it has a special meaning, urging Charlie to buy a lottery ticket. Kind Charlie did not have money to pay Eva a tip at breakfast, so he agreed that if the lottery winners will be divided in half, and if not won the next day to make up for the tip. No seriously Eva did not expect the miracle of things happened, Charlie's lottery won four million dollars at once! Charlie kept his promise and gave Eva half of his winnings, freeing her from a life of bankruptcy and poverty, despite his wife's discontent. As the wife becomes a rich man, she is seen laughing and joking in high society, while Charlie gets closer to the equally kind and passionate Eva. The wife takes them to court to get her property back, and Charlie and Eva lose. Planning to leave the city, the two spend their last night together in their own coffee shop, giving a bowl of hot soup to a penniless black man on a rainy night. The black reporter, who has been working in New York City for ten years, writes about this night's experience in the newspaper, and all of New York City learns the story of this pair of kind people and sends them their own tips.
