Captain Yariksi (Harrison Ford), at the height of Cold War tensions, is ordered to replace Captain Mick Hale (Liam Neeson) as commander of the nuclear-powered missile submarine K-19. Yariksi's mission is to put the poorly maintained submarine on operational alert as soon as possible, at all costs, on its maiden voyage. But the two men and the entire boat's loyal officers and men could not have imagined the mission they would go on. Nor could they have imagined what the cost of failure would mean for them and the world. At that moment, a nuclear reactor malfunctioned and a dangerous fuel rod was about to melt and explode, which would have surely buried the entire crew on board. It was the bravery of the entire crew and the captain's sense of duty to his country and to his crew that ultimately saved K-19 from an imminent nuclear disaster as they cruised the bottom of the Arctic Ocean.
