In London in 1952, after years as a civil servant, William has become a screw in the bureaucracy of post-war Britain's reconstruction, with endless piles of paperwork on his desk, when the weary man learns that he is terminally ill and sets out to find some meaning in his grey, monotonous life before he dies. He tries his hand at indulgence, neglecting his family and work, etc. Then William is drawn to Margaret, a young female colleague in the same office, who seems to represent life and vibrancy in person, and something that passes through William's life. Their friendship deepens and she inadvertently shows him how to face the death of a human being, how to accumulate his life experience and dedicate one last wholehearted effort, against all odds, to promote a long-delayed project to help move children in poor areas of London.
