Two retired Army officers accidentally find a police badge and a skull somewhere in the southern desert of Texas, USA. So Sam Dice, a police officer in a neighbouring town, begins to investigate what started it all. In the course of his preliminary investigation, Sam comes to a saloon, and during his conversation with the owner, Sam gets some past events from the owner, which also includes Sam's father, Bowdie Deeds, and a notorious sheriff, who turns out to have been persecuted by this evilless sheriff, but could do nothing about it. Thus begins a series of old stories and new discoveries ......
