In the future, an industrial society built on oil collapses due to war and depletion of resources, and people fight to the death for gasoline, a horrific post-apocalyptic vision of hell. Having lost friends and loved ones, Max (Mel Gibson) makes his car his home and continues his endless battle with the Road Riders. However, because his V8 loses fuel, Max has to leave the highway, guided by a trap hunter, to an oil rig in search of fuel. The people of the desert, in defense of the rig, have built defenses against the Riders' Hugh Mangus gang. Max rescues a dying rig defender from the Riders, only to be held captive by the rig's defenders instead, and at that moment, Hugh Mangus leads his men in encircling the rig, and, in a moment of crisis, Max devises a plan to fight Hugh Mangus... ...
