The main character of the episode is Makin (Malcolm, played by Frankie Muniz), who is the third of four brothers (there are five brothers since the birth of Zhiming in Season 5), and whose parents are Char (Hal, played by Bryan Cranston) and Ruth (Lois, played by Jane Kaczmarek). The eldest son of the family, Vance (Francis, played by Christopher Masterson), left home to attend military school, while Lace (Reese, played by Justin Bayfield), Makin, and Dewey (Dewey, played by Eric Pearl Sullivan) stayed at home, with Makin being the middle of the three brothers in the family, and for which the episode gets its name (Malcolm in the Middle directly translates as Malcolm in the Middle). The first part of the series focuses on how Markin, a gifted teenager, deals with his eccentric life, while the later part of the series gradually explores the other characters in more depth.
