Bessie (Diane Keaton), a middle-aged woman, has spent most of her life caring for two elderly relatives: her father, Marvin, who is suffering from a stroke, and her eccentric Aunt Ruth. Now, Bessie herself is suffering from blood cancer, and her only hope for survival is for someone in her close family to provide bone marrow. Bessie has no choice but to contact her sister Lee (Meryl Streep), whom she hasn't spoken to in 20 years. Lee, a single mother, doesn't want to meet Bessie, but takes her son, Hank (Leonardo DiCaprio), back home to Florida with her, thinking that she can use this as a way to temporarily put aside the troubles caused by his arson in the family home. The sisters are in a good mood when they first meet, but as time passes, the unhappiness of the past comes back to haunt them. And Hank, who has been hospitalized in a mental institution, is reluctant to have a bone marrow test, breaking Bessie's heart. Later, Hank's relationship with Bessie miraculously improves and restores the bond between the two sisters ......
