Tessa (Jodie Comer) is a young, talented criminal defence lawyer with a love of winning. She has worked her way up from a working class background to become a top lawyer, defending, cross-examining and removing doubt from any case. She doesn't make value judgements about her clients, doesn't believe in one side of the story, and can't even trust her own instincts; she only believes in ‘the truth under the law’, and that the law and the system will come up with a judgement that is closest to the truth. But an unforeseen event forces her to confront the divide between law, burden of proof and ethics in a patriarchal system.
