Sailor (Sam Riley) is a young writer in search of inspiration and eager to roam, while Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) is a flamboyant, disturbed teenager who has been to prison several times and is married to 16-year-old Marilou (Kristen Stewart). However, Sal loves Dean's passionate life, and Dean admires Sal's grace and knowledge. The three freedom-obsessed youths befriend each other and soon decide to leave their lives behind and walk the road together. They hitchhike and smoke marijuana along the way, singing while traveling and meditating while drunk. On the avenue that crosses the east and west of the United States, they let loose, pursuing themselves and burning their youth.
