Set in scenic Orange County, the accidental death of a friend shocks Sean (Colin Hanks), an original lover of surfing, because never before has such a real and painful thing happened in his world. By chance, Sean digs in the sand and discovers author Marcus' (Kevin Kline) novel Neat Jacket, which revolutionizes Sean, who decides to give up surfing and become a writer instead.While completing his first novel, Sean uses his intelligence and hard work to get excellent test scores, and he sends his novel to Marcus, sending his application to Stanford University, where Marcus is a student. Unexpectedly, all the hard work was rewarded with an echo of rejection; as it turns out, the school sent the transcript of a poor student to Stanford by mistake as Sean's transcript. With only 24 hours left, Sean must do everything he can to correct this fatal mistake.
