Roland (Aaron Eckhart) has made a name for himself in academic circles because of his research on Randolph Henry Ashe (Jeremy Northam), a famous poet of the Queen Victoria era. Maud (Gwyneth Paltrow) is also a scholar, and her subject of study is another poet of Queen Victoria's time, Lamont (Jennifer Ehle). In history, these two talented poets have met at a dinner party and have no further contact.By chance, Roland and Maud discover a long-ago love letter that could have been written by Randolph to Lamont, which means that Roland and Maud will make a name for themselves in the academic world with this discovery.
