During the American Civil War, Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire) is the son of a German in the South, and unlike his father who supported the North, he supports the South. He joins a Southern guerrilla force with his best friend Jack Bull Chiles (Skeet Ulrich). They in turn befriend George Clyde and George's former black slave Daniel Holt (Jeffrey Wright). All four serve under John Black's unit. While stationed in the mountains, village widows Sue Lee Shelley (Pearl Jewel Kilcher) and Jack Bull fall in love, and later in the war, Jack is killed in action, and Jake comes into conflict with one of the troopers named Pitt (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Pitt shoots and injures Jake and Holt. Later, Jake marries Sue, and on their way to another city, Jake and Holt meet up with Pitt again. ....
