When the Civil War breaks out, Neeson plays Carver, a Southern officer who takes four followers on a murderous rampage, while Gideon, played by Pierce Brosnan, flees along the way. The battle between the two sides begins in the snow-capped Rocky Mountains of Nevada and kills its way to the inhospitable New Mexico desert. In the process, Carver's followers die one by one and the two leads are tossed out of shape ......Gideon, clad in a bulky leather coat, nestled on a snowy hill facing a fire for warmth, flanked by the listless old horse and the rifle he used to save his life, the three brothers listened to the wind without a sound until Carver's bullet flew past Gideon's head, provoking Gideon to flee in panic. Just as he ran in panic deeper into the jungle, a second bullet that followed still bore hard into his left arm. He lost his balance and stumbled down the waterfall. ...... As Gideon fought his way up from the bone-chilling river and picked the bullet out of his flesh with a sharp knife, a primitive state of American society was shown in this brutal scene, and the audience was thrown the big question mark - where did the grudge between the two men start? The director suggests to the audience that Carver's bitter hatred towards Gideon may symbolise the root cause of the civil war.
