Born with an intellectual disability, Carl (Billy Bob Thornton) was born into an unfortunate family: his superstitious parents always treated him as a punishment from heaven, and thus loathed him and abused him all the time. Living in the shadows since childhood, Carl is 8 years old when he witnesses his mother cheating on him with a pimp, and his repressed emotions explode when he stabs both men to death with a spring-loaded knife. Carl spent the next 25 years in a mental institution.On the day he was discharged from the hospital, the homeless Carl was taken in for a night by the administrator of the asylum, which was the first time he felt the warmth of the earth. After his discharge, Carl is avoided like the plague until he meets his best friend Frank (Lucas Black). Frank treats him like his best friend, and Carl sees sunshine in his life. Recently, however, Frank's family has been upset by his mother's alcoholic boyfriend. Seeing his friend suffer, Carl, who can't stand it anymore, decides to step up to the plate.
