In 1950, a local resident of a U.S. island, Carl, dies while fishing at night. The sheriff finds the case highly suspicious, and the medical examiner, who has a tendency to be anti-Japanese, implicates Japanese resident Kazuo Miyamoto in the case, and the court immediately launches a trial of Miyamoto, with island newspaper reporter Ismail (Ethan Hawke) caring a lot about the trial because of his personal relationship. It turns out that Miyamoto's wife, Kaneda Hatsuie (Yuki Kudo), was Ismail's childhood sweetheart. Later, when the U.S. and Japan declared war, the Japanese residents of the island began to be ostracized, and Kaneda's family was treated unfairly and sent to an internment camp for labor, and Ismail's advocacy was threatened by his compatriots, so the romance had to come to an end. Ismail's search of the island's weather records on the night of the incident yields vital evidence that Bill died in an accident, but this means that his reunion with Hatsue is no longer possible. As the trial progresses, more and more evidence points to Miyamoto, while the war, which has not yet subsided, has left the locals with a tinted view of people of Japanese descent, Ismail deliberates and makes a final decision.
