Edward Newgate (Jim Sturgess), a psychiatrist and academic who claims to be from Oxford University, arrives at the remote Stonehurst Asylum, where he hopes to learn about treatments from the accomplished Professor Silas Lamb (Ben Kingsley). Silas has a somber demeanor and employs treatments that are very different from those that were prevalent at the time, but it seems that the patients are relieved and recovered to some degree. During this time, Edward is attracted to the beautiful and dignified noblewoman Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale), who suffers from psychogenic hysteria. Edward, a newcomer to the city, senses something strange about the hospital, and soon discovers the horrifying secret behind it...
