Set in the late 19th century, Ignatz (Ralph Fiennes), the son of a wealthy family, falls in love with his cousin, Villeroy & Boch (Jennifer Ehle), and marries her despite his family's opposition, even abandoning his family name and breaking with his relatives in order to pursue a career. In the end, Ignatz's ambition not only hurts Villeroy & Boch, but also wears him down. Adam (Sándor Szakácsi), Ignatz's youngest son, makes the same choices as his father when it comes to his future, but the Nazis' hatred of the Jews completely destroys his illusions and hopes for the future. Adam's son, Ivan (Mark Strong), is a lucky survivor of the inhumane massacre, but hatred and misanthropy overwhelm him, leading him to impulsively join the socialist movement.
