When the American nuclear submarine Montana goes missing while tracking an unidentified object in the deep sea, foreman Bud (Ed Harris) of the high-pressure diving rig Heart of the Deep is ordered to cooperate with Captain Coffey (Michael Biehn) in a rescue mission. What is unexpected is that he is joined by his wife, Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), an oil company engineer with whom Bud has been having a falling out. The three-member rescue team dives to the edge of the abyss where the submarine has disappeared, only to discover that no one has survived and, alarmingly, that an unknown monster exists in the abyss. After a series of crises, Captain Coffey is dissuaded from a Soviet plot and decides to launch a nuclear bomb removed from the submarine at an unknown enemy, so Bud and Lindsey join forces in a fight to the death. In the nick of time, Bud saves Lindsey from danger and dives into the abyss to defuse the nuclear warhead.
