C. C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is an employee of a large company in New York. His bachelor apartment is often used by the company's executives as a place for tryst, and Baxter gets a lot of promotion. Baxter has a crush on Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), an elevator girl at his company, and finally finds the courage to ask her out for an evening out at a play. Baxter, however, spent the night waiting but found no Fran, who turned out to be the underground lover of Jeffery Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), a senior executive with a wife, who met at Baxter's apartment that night. Jeffery promised Fran that he would divorce his wife and be with her. Fran believed him, but a few weeks later she learned from Jeffery's previous lover that his story was a lie. On the other hand, one night when Baxter came back to his house, he was surprised to find Fran lying on his bed, taking sleeping pills and trying to kill herself...
